Gary A. Pierson

Political Director – SMART Local Union No.20

Gary A. Pierson, Political Director of the Indianapolis Area, was born on in Beech Grove, Indiana. He has two children, Brian and Melinda.

After graduating from Beech Grove High School in 1972, Gary began his apprenticeship, and was sworn in as a Journeyman in September 1976.

He was elected as Warden in June 1982 and held that position until being elected as Business Representative in August 1987. Since that time, Gary has attended several classes at IUPUI and has served on the following committees: FAIR, Hoosier Alliance for Consumer Rights, Jobs for Justice, Taxpayers for a Better Indiana, Indiana Health Care Campaign, State EAP, COMET, Muncie Building Trades Softball Tournament, Labor Fest, Labor Night at Bush Stadium, Citizen’s Action Coalition and School-To-Work.

Gary has served on the Contract Negotiation Committee and has been appointed as a Trustee for the Health & Welfare Fund, the Annuity Fund, as well as the Labor Management Cooperation Committee (LMCC).

He has been elected as Vice President for the Central Indiana Building Trades Council and Trustee for the South Central Building Trades Council. He was also elected as the past Financial Secretary for the Central Indiana Labor Council.

Gary’s current responsibilities include: overseeing the day-to-day duties in the Indianapolis office, monitoring activity in Decatur, Fayette, Franklin, Ripley, Rush, Shelby, Union and Marion County. Politically, he participates in the Mayor’s Labor Advisory Committee, Marion County Democratic Club (Chairman’s Club), Indiana State Democratic Club, Labor Day Parade, Retiree’s Club, Asbestos Screening, and Health Fair/Blood Drive.

Gary is very active and interested in his own community as well. He served 15 years as Beech Grove City Councilman, where he was appointed to serve on the Beech Grove Sanitation Board, Beech Grove Board of Works, Beech Grove Middle School Council, Amtrak Task Force and Beech Grove Economic Task Force. He currently is the Beech Grove Democratic Ward Chairman.

Gary enjoys going to high school and college sporting events, as well as reading.
